Bloggers Quilt Festival – Fall 2012 Edition

Welcome to Basildon Kitchens – I am so excited to be taking part in Amy’s Bloggers Quilt Festival – Fall 2012.  The Fall edition takes place form October 26 – November 8, 2012.

The quilt I have chosen for the Festival, is called “Sew Out Loud – Connie Creates”.  I joined a fantastic quilt-a-long through Flickr, called “Sew Out Loud {quilters wordplay}“.  The project is all about paper piecing!  I wasn’t fond of paper piecing.  Mostly because I wasn’t comfortable with it and as a result, I wasn’t very good at it.  So I decided, that this QAL was just for me – I would get lots of practice, get lots of tips from some of the best out there in blog-land, and in the privacy of my own home, so if things didn’t go well – well you know!  (You can see more about the project and the progress on my “Sew Out Loud {quilters word play} page on this blog.)

My paper piecing challenge!

Each block was based on something quilting related, and had words.  Also, to make it more fun, we were to use fabric with printed words on it.  This meant I had to go shopping, but a girl has to do what a girl has to do and it was a challenge that I was definitely up to 😉

I am very happy with my finished quilt.  It is a wall hanging and is waiting for my hubby to help me hang it properly in my sewing room.  It is my inspiration.  Mostly I am just pleased that it turned out so well.

It measures approximately 40″ wide x 53″ long.  I used some fabric out of my stash, some great Michael Miller script fabric and a layer cake of Moda’ Circa 1934.  I love the typewriter key letters.  I used the polka dot fabric for little corner stones and it is sashed and bound in Kona Charcoal.

My personalized block

I am trying my hand at machine quilting these days, though am still practicing.  I machine quilted down each side of the sashing seams and then I hand quilted detail on all the blocks.  The sewing machine block actually has an needle – I used a basting pin from the back – I think it looks very life-like.
