January 2018 – week 2

Welcome and thank you for joining me on my fifth year of taking/posting photos every day. I have found a rhythm that works for me…and will continue as long as I enjoy this endeavour.

This week’s weather has been quite interesting. Frigid temperatures to start; a wild swing to warm weather with rain & melting snow and then a flash freeze and more snow.

Now onto this week’s photos:

January 7 – snowing again; this winter is bringing us lots of snow…but it is so quiet when you walk and so pretty…unless, of course, you have to shovel it.

January 8 – picnic pavilion behind some snowy dunes; no picnics today…bitter cold winds and -32C before windchill. Brrr!

January 9 – icy day at the beach; it looks like another planet, and not the nicest day to sit on that park bench. The mounds are caused by repeated motion of the waves throwing ice onto the beach, then cold & more snow make this wonderful (if cold) lunar landscape.

January 10 – low winter sun; not much warmth here and you can see a snow squall forming over the lake. Layers of ice in different forms can been seen here, ice & snow on the beach; frozen mounds from wave action & then loose, floating ice further out. If you look closely, you can actually still see a little open water in the distance!

January 11 – magic of water, wind & cold! The lighthouse and shrubs are covered in ice from the wind & waves. They look like beautiful sculptures.

January 12 – multiple coffee kind of day; drove to work in the rain & fog, watched the temperatures drop from 10C to 1C by noon and by late afternoon to -8C and a flash freeze; the rain turned to freezing rain & then to snow on top of that….I made it home just in time before the worst conditions hit!

January 13 – new lake in the back yard; at some point the day before, 90% of our property was underwater due to a ice-jam. The county came to break it up and it slowly started to drain. We still have lots of ice chunks under the snow, and a new lake in the back yard. Winter weather; always an adventure!

  1. Flooding of my property would make me feel a bit nervous. I hope there was no risk to your home from the accumulating water.

The Jan 11th photo of the iced shrub and lighthouse continues to wow me. There is just such a surreal quality to this beautifully shot image!

    1. Our home was safe, but the quick response from the county roads department (they broke an ice jam at the road) was our saving grace. The water you see is from a second ice jam, being diverted from the stream bed to the field behind us…it happens every year.

The lighthouse is one of my favourite spots to photograph in all seasons. I’m not too fond of winter’s bitter wind, but it’s worth it for this photo….. 🙂
